Maternal and Child Health - A Rotary Area of Focus
Welcome on the Maternal & Child Health project website of the Rotarian Action Group for Population & Development (RFPD)!
This website is thought for everybody who is interested in maternal and child health and is meant as an information resource for Rotarians, showing ways to get involved in implementing this area of focus. You will find an overview about RFPD’s past and current efforts in improving maternal and child health, including the methodology for the model to reduce maternal and newborn mortality that was developed in the Maternal Health Pilot Project (2005-2010) in Nigeria. The successful model is suitable for scaling up in other regions and countries. Join in and help us saving lives!
If you want to get an impression about the everyday struggle for survival within the maternity wards in the pilot project region (Nigeria) and why the improvement of maternal and child health is so important, watch our awareness film ‘The Edge of Joy‘.

Rotary's Future Vision Plan
The Future Vision Plan is The Rotary Foundation’s initiative to focus efforts in order to achieve greater impact, more public recognition, and streamlined operations for improved efficiency. It will also help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's Strategic Plan. The Future Vision Plan includes a new grant model to support Rotary club and district projects and identifies six Areas of Focus [2.817 KB] (organizational priorities) in which these projects shall be implemented.
Areas of Focus:
- Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
- Disease prevention and treatment
- Water and sanitation
- Maternal and child health
- Basic education and literacy
- Economic and community development
Maternal and Child Health:
Due to its 15 years of experience and its continuous efforts within this area of focus, e.g. the initiation and organization of the sucessful 'signature project' Improvement of Maternal Health, the Rotarian Action Group for Population & Development (RFPD) now is one of Rotary International's (RI) official resources for the area of focus 'Maternal and Child Health' (see here). RI also has a strategic partnership with the Aga Khan University.
